Why won't your candle light? Most common causes and solutions
You light a match, touch it to the wick, and... nothing. The flame skims the surface, the wick catches fire for a moment and then goes out. Sound familiar? Trouble lighting a candle is one of the most common frustrations for both candle users and DIY candle makers. The good news is that in the vast majority of cases, the cause is trivial, and fixing it takes just a few minutes and doesn't require throwing the candle in the bin. Most common reasons for problems with lighting a candle
Why won't your candle light? Almost always, the culprit is the wick or its immediate surroundings. Here's a list of suspects, from most common:
- Flooded wick. The wick is submerged in wax or only protrudes 1-2 mm above the surface. The flame has nothing to hold onto and goes out before it can melt the wax.
- Wick trimmed too short. Someone trimmed the wick "to zero" or it broke off during cleaning. The effect is the same as with a flooded wick: not enough material to sustain the flame.
- Damp wick. The candle was in a humid room (bathroom, basement) or got wet. Wet cotton won't burn; the flame hisses and goes out.
- Soot and "mushroom" on the wick. A black, hard ball of burnt cotton at the end of the wick makes relighting difficult and causes smoking.
- Too much fragrance. This is a common problem with homemade candles. Wax overloaded with fragrance "chokes" the wick, which burns weakly or not at all.
- Incorrect wick. A wick that is too thin for the container diameter or wax density will not be able to melt the surface and will constantly flicker out.

Flickering wick in a candle: how to fix it?
A separate category of problem: the candle lights, but after a few minutes the flame diminishes, flickers, and finally disappears. A flickering wick in a candle usually has one of three causes.
Flame drowning in wax. If melted wax collects faster than the wick can burn it, the flame gradually submerges. This happens with a wick that is too thin or in a tall, narrow container where there is insufficient oxygen. Temporary solution: extinguish the candle, pour off or blot excess liquid wax around the wick with a paper towel, and relight.
Lack of oxygen. Candles in deep jars with tapered tops simply suffocate. The flame needs a constant supply of air. Do not cover a burning candle and do not place it in tight enclosures.
Draft. Paradoxically, air movement also extinguishes candles: a gust cools the flame and blows it off the wick. If the candle is near a window, vent, or air conditioning, move it to a calmer spot.
What to do when the candle won't burn?
The candle won't burn, what to do in practice? Here's a step-by-step repair procedure, starting with the simplest actions:
- Clean the wick. Trim off any soot and burnt tip, aiming for a length of about 0.5 cm. Use a wick trimmer or scissors.
- Expose the wick. If the wick barely protrudes, gently scrape away the wax around it with a spoon or dull knife to expose about 0.5 cm of cotton.
- Dry the candle. If dampness is suspected, move the candle to a dry, warm room for 1-2 days. Do not dry it in an oven or on a radiator.
- Light correctly. Hold the flame to the wick for a few extra seconds until the cotton catches fire along its entire exposed length. A long match or kitchen lighter works best.
- Give the candle time. Once lit, allow it to burn for at least an hour until the wax pool melts evenly. Short burning sessions are a straightforward path to tunneling and subsequent lighting problems.
If the candle still goes out despite all this, the problem likely lies in its construction: a wick that is too thin or wax overloaded with fragrance. For a homemade candle, treat this as a valuable lesson for the next batch: choose a wick one size larger or reduce the amount of fragrance oil.
Wick too short: how to fix it?
A wick that is too short in a candle looks like a serious problem, but it's surprisingly easy to fix. The goal is to lower the wax level so that the wick once again protrudes a safe 0.5 cm.
Paper towel method. Light the candle for a moment (if possible) and allow a pool of liquid wax to form around the wick. Extinguish the flame and absorb the liquid wax with a folded paper towel. Repeat 2-3 times until the wick is clearly exposed.
Spoon method. If the candle won't light at all, scrape away the solidified wax around the wick with a spoon or a dull knife. Remove enough to expose about 0.5 cm of the wick. The surface will be uneven temporarily, but it will even out during the next burn.
Hair dryer method. Direct a stream of warm air onto the candle's surface until the wax around the wick melts, then absorb it with a paper towel. This method also smooths out the candle's surface.
Important: do not try to "lengthen" the wick by prying it up and pulling it out of the wax by force. It's easy to break it or damage the anchor at the bottom, which ends the candle's life much more effectively than a short wick.
How to fix a flooded wick?
Flooded wick, how to fix it quickly and without a mess? This is the most common outcome when a candle is extinguished, and the liquid wax completely covers the wick.
First, assess the scale. If the wick is only coated with a thin layer of wax, simply clean it gently: rub the wax with your fingers or scrape it off with a fingernail, straighten the wick, and trim the tip. The dry cotton underneath will light without a problem.
If the wick is submerged deeper, use one of the methods from the previous section: scoop out the wax with a spoon or melt the surface with a hairdryer and blot the excess with a paper towel. Work patiently, layer by layer, until about 0.5 cm of the wick is exposed.
For the future, remember two rules that prevent flooding. First, extinguish the candle with a snuffer instead of blowing: blowing can push the wick into the liquid wax. Second, do not move a burning or freshly extinguished candle, as liquid wax easily spills and submerges the wick.
