What is paraffin wax?
Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum refining. It is formed during the purification of lubricating oils and is a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons that, at room temperature, appears as a white or cream-colored solid. Due to its low production cost, good moldability, and high availability, paraffin has become the dominant material in industrial candle production worldwide.
Paraffin wax has a melting point between 46-68°C, depending on the variety, binds fragrances and dyes well, and finished candles have a smooth, aesthetic surface. That's why for decades it has been and still is the basic raw material in the candle industry. It is worth noting, however, that paraffin used for candle production undergoes a refining and purification process and is by no means the same as crude oil.
Are paraffin fumes harmful to health?
Is paraffin harmful? This is a question where precision is important, as the internet is full of both exaggerated alarms and overly hasty assurances of safety.
Burning paraffin while a candle is lit does indeed release certain chemical compounds into the air. Scientific studies have shown that trace amounts of compounds such as toluene, benzene, or formaldehyde can be produced, which are substances that are harmful to health in high concentrations. - Beeswax. One of the purest options among popular waxes. It does not contain petroleum derivatives and produces minimal soot. It is also credited with emitting negative ions that are said to neutralize air pollutants.
- Coconut and rapeseed wax. Rank close to soy wax: natural, plant-based, with low soot emissions. However, no wax is completely "neutral," as any combustion produces some chemical reaction products. The difference lies in their type and quantity.
How to reduce the risk associated with burning candles at home?
A few simple rules significantly reduce potential risks regardless of the type of wax used.
- Ventilate the room regularly. This is the simplest and most effective method, as air exchange removes combustion products.
- Trim the wick to about 0.5 cm before each lighting. A wick that is too long results in a larger flame, more soot, and more intense release of volatile substances.
- Do not burn candles for more than 3-4 hours in one session, then extinguish them and ventilate the room.
- Avoid burning near air conditioning and fans. Air currents cause smoking and significantly increase soot emissions.
- Choose candles with certified ingredients and a safety data sheet. This ensures you know the composition of the fragrance and dyes.
