You light a candle, the flame burns nicely, and after fifteen minutes, you glance over to find a wisp of smoke above an extinguished wick. You light it again, and the story repeats. A candle that extinguishes itself can be frustrating, especially if it's your own carefully crafted soy candle. Rest assured: a wick never goes out "without a reason." Every self-extinguishing incident has a specific, physical cause, and most of them can be resolved in minutes. In this article, you'll find all the most common scenarios, from drowning wicks to finicky wooden wicks, along with solutions.

Most common causes of an extinguishing wick

Why does the wick go out even though the candle seems perfectly fine? A flame needs three things simultaneously: fuel (liquid wax), oxygen, and the right temperature. If any of these elements are missing, the flame weakens and goes out. Here are the most common reasons:

  • The wick is drowning in wax. A classic. A wick that is too thin cannot keep up with burning the wax that melts around it. The level of the liquid surface rises, the flame gradually submerges, and eventually goes out, "drowned" in its own fuel.
  • The wick is too short. A wick trimmed too low or covered in wax from a previous burn barely extends above the surface. A small flame cannot sustain itself and goes out at the first disturbance.
  • The wick is too thick in a small container. The opposite problem: a large flame quickly melts the entire surface, the pool becomes deep, and the wick eventually drowns anyway. Excess is never safer than deficiency.
  • Too much fragrance oil. Exceeding the wax's load capacity (for soy, usually 8-10%) means the oil doesn't fully bind with the wax, clogs the capillary channels of the wick, and chokes the flame.
  • Lack of oxygen. Candles in tall, narrow, or tapered containers suffocate in their own carbon dioxide. The flame gradually weakens, becomes small and blue, until it finally disappears.
  • Impurities in the wax. Match remnants, carbon deposits, decorative dried botanicals, or dye particles can block the wick and cut off the fuel supply.
  • Moisture. A damp wick (a candle stored in a bathroom or basement) hisses, crackles, and extinguishes because water effectively cools the flame.

How to choose the right wick for a candle?

If your self-extinguishing soy candle is your own production and the problem recurs throughout an entire batch, the cause is almost certainly the wick selection for the candle. This is the single most important decision in the entire candle project, more important than scent and color combined.

When choosing, be guided by three parameters:

  1. Container diameter. The primary criterion. The wick must be able to melt the wax pool from wall to wall within 2-4 hours. Wick manufacturers provide diameter ranges for each size; treat these as a starting point.
  2. Type of wax. Natural waxes, especially soy and beeswax, are denser and heavier than paraffin, so they require thicker wicks. The same container filled with soy needs a wick one or two sizes larger than if it were filled with paraffin.
  3. Additives. Fragrance oil and dye thicken the wax and hinder its capillary action up the wick. A heavily fragranced candle may need a wick one size larger than the same unscented candle.

The golden rule: always make a test candle. Before pouring an entire batch, prepare one candle and burn it for 3-4 hours. A wax pool melted to the edges, a calm flame, 2-3 cm high, no sooting, and no drowning: this is a sign that the wick is correctly chosen. If the wax pool doesn't reach the edges, go up one size; if the flame is flickering wildly and sooting, go down one size.

Why might a wooden wick extinguish?

A wooden wick extinguishes more often than a cotton wick, and this is not a coincidence but due to the nature of the material. Wooden wicks provide a beautiful, wide flame and a soothing crackle like a fireplace, but they are also more demanding.

  • Wick too long. The most common mistake. A wooden wick must be trimmed shorter than a cotton wick, to about 3-4 mm above the wax surface. A longer wick cannot draw up the wax to its full height and extinguishes as soon as the dry tip burns out.
  • Wood moisture. Wood naturally absorbs moisture from the air. Wicks stored in a damp room burn poorly and extinguish. Keep them in a dry place, and before use, you can store them in a sealed container.
  • Wick too thin or single in a large container. In wide containers, wooden wicks often require a double (two-layered) or wider version to manage the wax pool.
  • Carbon buildup on the edge. After each burn, a carbonized layer remains on the top edge of a wooden wick. Before relighting, it needs to be gently crumbled with fingers or trimmed; otherwise, the flame won't reach the fresh wood.
  • Lighting technique. A wooden wick takes longer to light than a cotton wick. Hold the flame to the edge of the wick and hold for a few seconds until the fire spreads across the entire width. If lit at a single point, it often extinguishes after a moment.

Solutions for a drowning wick in a candle

A drowning wick in a candle, which is when the flame gradually sinks into a growing pool of wax, is the most common scenario for self-extinguishing. Here's an action plan, from immediate rescue to a permanent solution:

  1. Immediate rescue. Extinguish the candle and remove the excess liquid wax with a paper towel or carefully pour it into a heat-resistant container. Trim the exposed wick (cotton to 0.5 cm, wood to 3-4 mm) and relight.
  2. Repeat with each burn. If the candle is store-bought and the wick clearly can't keep up, regularly removing wax will allow it to burn down completely. It's not elegant, but it works.
  3. Mind the burn time. Do not burn the candle for more than 3-4 hours. The longer the session, the deeper the wax pool and the greater the risk of the flame drowning.
  4. Protect the candle from drafts. Air movement cools the flame and disrupts the balance of melting and burning, causing the wick to drown faster.
  5. In your own production: change the wick. If the wick regularly drowns, it's too thin. Go up one size and make a test candle. If you suspect too much fragrance, reduce the dosage to 6-8% and compare.
  6. Check the wax for cleanliness. Remove any impurities from the wax pool and do not embed decorations near the wick. Keep dried botanicals and flowers close to the container walls.

An extinguishing wick is not a death sentence for a candle, but a message: not enough fuel, not enough oxygen, or a flame that is too weak.
