Have you ever poured your heart and soul into making your own candle, choosing the most beautiful scent, the perfect jar, and then… a huge disappointment? You light it, and the flame barely flickers or smokes like a factory chimney. I know that pain. When I first started my candle journey, I thought the wax and fragrance were 90% of the answer. How wrong I was!

The truth is, the wick is the heart and engine of your candle . It determines whether the wax transforms into a beautiful light or a sad tunnel in the middle of the jar. A poorly chosen wick can ruin the best wax, while a well-chosen one will maximize its full potential.

What is a candle wick made of?

At first glance, a wick is simply a piece of string. But when you look closer, you'll see a whole lot of engineering involved. What is a candle wick made of? Most often, it's pure cotton, but that's not the only option.

Imagine a wick as a system of tubes (a bit like a straw) that transports melted wax upward, straight to the flame. To ensure this "straw" works efficiently and doesn't clog, manufacturers use various materials and weaves:

  • Raw or bleached cotton: A classic. This natural fiber absorbs wax very well. You'll often find wicks braided into a flat or round shape.

  • Cores (stiffeners): Sometimes cotton alone is too limp (especially in large candles). In such cases, a thin zinc wire, paper, or linen is woven into the core. This allows the wick to stand at attention in the melted wax and prevent it from tipping over.

  • Wood: Increasingly popular, especially in soy candles. These thin strips of wood (usually from fruit or exotic trees) not only burn differently, but also…sound differently!

Choosing a material isn't just a matter of aesthetics. It also determines how hot the flame will be and how quickly your candle will release its fragrance.

Types of candle wicks and their uses

You walk into a candle shop and see hundreds of labels: ECO, VRL, TCR, ST, Wooden… It can be dizzying. Relax, let's break this down. Candle wick types are divided primarily by their construction and purpose.

1. Flat cotton wicks

These are usually standard braids. They're super popular in paraffin candles, but they can be a bit tricky with thicker natural waxes. They tend to bend slightly while burning (known as self-trimming), which is a major advantage.

2. Round and square cotton wicks

So how do you choose a wick for a soy candle to avoid disaster?

  1. Measure the diameter of your vessel: This is absolutely crucial. You need to know how wide your vessel is inside. You'll need one wick for a cup (5 cm diameter) and another for a wide glass (8 cm diameter).

  2. Look for dedicated lines: Don't buy a "pig in a poke." Aim for lines proven for soy, such as cotton wicks from the CD , ECO , or VRL series . These are designed to combat soy's stickiness.

  3. The "one size up" rule: If the wick manufacturer states that a given size fits a 7 cm diameter, and you're using soy wax with a high content of fragrance oils or dye, choose a larger size. Additives (fragrance, color) clog the wick, so you need a more powerful motor.

What's the best soy candle wick to start with? In my opinion, the CD or Stabilo series are the best. They're forgiving for beginners and rarely "mushroom" (meaning they don't develop that ugly, charred ball).

Wooden or cotton wick - which one to choose?

It's a bit like choosing between a sports car and a comfortable station wagon. Both will get you to your destination, but the driving experience is different. Consider the dilemma: wood or cotton ?

Cotton Wick - Advantages and Disadvantages

  • For whom: For traditionalists and people who want to be sure of even combustion.

  • Pros: Easy to use, cheaper, wide selection of sizes, predictable flame.

  • Cons: Sometimes smokes, may form "mushrooms" at the end, looks ordinary.

Wooden Wick - Advantages and Disadvantages

  • For whom: For those looking for atmosphere, the "wow" effect and the sound of a fireplace.

  • Pros: Sizzles beautifully (ASMR effect!), looks modern, delivers great scent (a wider flame melts the wax faster).

  • Cons: More difficult to choose. How do you choose a wooden wick for a candle? The margin for error is smaller. If it's too weak, it will go out. If it's too strong, the wax will boil. It also requires trimming before each lighting (very briefly!).

Verdict: If you're making a candle for a gift and want it to be "exclusive," go with wood. If you're making a candle for everyday burning and want stability, cotton is a safer bet.

Wick thickness and candle efficiency

We've reached the most important point of the program. You can have the best wax and the most expensive oil, but if the candle wick thickness is not right, it will all be wasted.

Why is this so important? It's called the melt pool . This is the pool of liquid wax that forms around the wick. The rule is simple: the wax should melt all the way to the walls of the vessel within about 2-3 hours of burning.

Scenario A: The wick is too thin

The flame is small and dull. The wax melts only around the center, leaving a thick layer of untouched wax on the walls. This creates a so-called tunnel. The candle is wasted because only the center burns, leaving you wasting money and frustration.

  3. If after 2-3 hours the wax has touched the sides of the vessel and the flame is steady, congratulations! You've hit the jackpot.
