Floating candles are an incredibly effective yet simple decoration that adds charm to any interior or event. They are perfect as a decorative element for special occasions, such as weddings, formal dinners, or simply as an everyday home decoration. Floating on water, surrounded by flower petals or green leaves, they create a magical atmosphere and attract attention.
Materials and tools required
Before you start making your own floating candles, make sure you have everything you need. Here is a list of materials and tools:
- soy wax - so that the candles can float freely on the surface of the water,
- knots - preferably thin, so that the candle can burn evenly on the water,
- candle molds - these can be small silicone molds or even ice cube trays with interesting shapes,
- drowning victim or a pot for melting wax - it's best to use a pot that is no longer used for culinary purposes,
- thermometer - will allow you to control the wax temperature,
- additional decorations - dyes, essential oils, dried flowers, etc., if you want to give your candles an extra character.

Floating Candles - DIY Step by Step
Now that you have all the necessary materials, you can start making candles:
- Melting the wax: Heat the wax in a melting pot, monitoring its temperature with a thermometer. The ideal temperature is around 70°C.
- Preparing the wicks: Trim the wicks to the appropriate length. If you are using silicone molds, you can place the wick in the center of each mold, stabilizing it with, for example, a wick stabilizer.
- Adding decorations: If you wish, add dyes or fragrance oils to the melted wax.
- Pouring wax into molds: Carefully pour the melted wax into the molds, being careful not to move the wicks.
- Dried flowers: To add variety to the look of the candles, add dried flowers to the top layer of wax. Remember not to place them too close to the wick, as this poses a fire hazard!
- Cooling: Leave the molds with the wax to cool and solidify completely, which may take several hours.
- Removing the candles: Once they have solidified, gently remove the candles from the molds. They are now ready to use!
Floating candles are a wonderful way to add a touch of sparkle and elegance to your home. Placing them in bowls of water, for example on a table or in the bathroom, allows you to enjoy their beautiful light and striking appearance. The process of creating them is equally enjoyable and offers the opportunity to experiment with different shapes, colors, and scents. This simple yet effective decoration is perfect for many occasions, bringing joy and charm to any interior. Whether you're planning a romantic dinner, a peaceful evening bath, or a festive holiday meal, floating candles will surely add magic to every moment.
